Basic Pediatric Dental Tips for Parents

Too many people have had negative dental experiences as a kid. That is why we encourage you to bring your child into the office while they are still very young. In fact, our dentists will see your child as early as one year of age. We feel this early interaction goes a long way for establishing a trusting and positive association with going to the dentist. Establishing good dental hygiene means healthy smiles for a lifetime.
Below are a several helpful pediatric dentistry tips:

  • Establish a daily routine for brushing your child’s teeth at an early age.
  • Once you are confident that your child can spit the toothpaste out properly after brushing, use a small pea-sized amount of toothpaste with a soft toothbrush to brush your child's teeth twice daily.
  • Brushing your child’s teeth should be fun! Singing a song while they brush is not only fun, but it will encourage them to continue brushing for the duration of the song.
  • Fluoride treatments can be beneficial when your child gets older. Fluoride will protect the permanent teeth when they come in and will make them more resistant to decay.
  • At two or three years of age you can floss between each baby molar. Flossing is a good habit to instill when your child has enough dexterity to do in on their own.
  • Be proactive and don’t put off bringing your child in for a routine check-up. It is important not to wait until they have a problem. We don’t want a child to associate pain with going to the dentist. Fun visits to the dentist early, make for positive experiences.
